I wrote a book!

It’s called Remedies for Sorrow and it’s available HERE! It was published by Doubleday in April of 2023.

Remedies for Sorrow begins with our second daughter’s diagnosis with congenital CMV on a small, foggy island in Southeast Alaska and becomes an investigation of the American prenatal system today: Why aren’t our obstetricians discussing the number one cause of birth defects and childhood disabilities in the United States? How is the American facade of having a perfect pregnancy putting us at greater risk of bearing children with life-impacting disabilities?

And, most importantly, how can we heal a medical system still largely governed by paternalism and a culture that doesn’t grant unconditional dignity to children who are born different?

Remedies for Sorrow is the story our doctors aren’t telling us. It’s also the story of loving Anna because of her differences, of the ways CMV has given me a deeper understanding of motherhood, language, and disability.
